About Us

Gateshead Council

Gateshead Council is the local government authority for the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead in Tyne and Wear, England. The council serves a population of approximately 196,100 residents, focusing on its core mission to make Gateshead a place where "everyone thrives" through its strategic approach to tackling inequality and supporting community resilience.

Who We Are

Gateshead Council functions as a democratically elected public body comprising 66 local ward councillors representing 22 wards.

Headquartered at the Civic Centre in Gateshead, the council operates under a Leader and Cabinet executive model. The Cabinet, led by the Council Leader, makes day-to-day decisions, while the full Council meets monthly to set budgets and overarching policies. The council is a key partner in the North East Combined Authority (NECA), benefiting from the 2024 devolution deals that provide greater regional funding for transport, skills, and business support.

The organisation is known for its "Thrive" strategy, which prioritises "People, Fair, Communities, Prosperous, and Future" as its five core pillars. It explicitly focuses on shifting resources toward the most vulnerable residents to lessen the impact of deep-seated inequalities.

Economy, Innovation & Growth

Supporting the "Business Gateshead" initiative to foster regional investment, including the Gateshead Quays Arena and Conference Centre development.

Public Health & Wellbeing

Approach & Values

Gateshead Council focuses on Inequality, Community Cohesion, and Sustainability.

Under the Community Cohesion Strategy (2026–2031), the council prioritises building trust through action. Their approach is "Relationship-Based," moving away from impersonal bureaucratic processes to put people and families at the heart of decision-making. They utilise a Local Outcomes Framework to measure success not just by outputs, but by the actual impact on residents' health and prosperity.

A strong emphasis is placed on "Financial Sustainability," adopting long-term strategic planning to manage a reduced budget while protecting frontline services through transformation and digital integration.

Industry Role

Gateshead Council plays a pivotal role in the North East England regional economy, acting as a major employer (4,192 staff) and a strategic driver for urban regeneration.

As a statutory public sector leader, the council contributes to national climate goals and regional devolution efforts. They act as a strategic advisor within the "Gateshead System"—an integrated partnership of health, housing, and social care—to ensure that local services are joined up and easy to navigate for the public.

They offer a comprehensive public service ecosystem, making them the primary point of contact for everything from local elections and council tax to major infrastructure projects that define the Tyneside skyline.
