Government of Jersey

The Government of Jersey, also known as the States of Jersey, is the democratic government of the Bailiwick of Jersey, a British Crown Dependency. We are responsible for the administration of the island, the delivery of public services, the development of local legislation, and the management of international relationships, specifically those concerning our unique constitutional status and economic interests.

Who We Are

Jersey is a self-governing dependency, meaning we have our own fiscal policy, legal system, and government structure, while the United Kingdom remains constitutionally responsible for our defence and some international representation. Our government is comprised of the States Assembly (the legislative body), the Council of Ministers (the executive body), and the Judiciary (the independent legal system).

What We Do

We provide a comprehensive range of public services to ensure the health, safety, and prosperity of Jersey’s residents and businesses:

• Public Health & Social Services: Managing the island’s healthcare infrastructure, including hospitals, community clinics, and social support frameworks.
• Economic & Financial Regulation: Maintaining Jersey’s status as a leading international finance centre by upholding rigorous regulatory standards and tax compliance frameworks.
• Education & Community Development: Overseeing the state-funded education system, youth services, and cultural heritage programmes.
• Infrastructure & Environment: Managing the island's utilities, transport systems, planning and environment regulations, and waste management services.
• Justice & Law Enforcement: Administering the judicial system, overseeing the States of Jersey Police, and ensuring the maintenance of law and order.

Industry Role

We operate as the Sovereign Administrative and Legislative Body. Our role is to act as the primary regulator and service provider for the Bailiwick of Jersey. We provide the governance, legal, and operational infrastructure necessary for the island to function as an independent, stable, and prosperous jurisdiction.
