About Us

Halow Project

The Halow Project (stylised in lowercase) is an independent, community-focused social care charity and support provider operating across Surrey. Based in Guildford, the organisation dedicatedly equips young adults (aged 16 and over) with learning disabilities and autism to build independent, meaningful lives and successfully transition into adulthood.

Who They Are

The Halow project positions itself as an empowering, aspiration-backed community asset. Rather than formatting support around traditional institutional care or static day centres, they operate with the foundational belief that young people with learning disabilities have the exact same right to life opportunities, choice, and social inclusion as any other citizen.

The charity was originally established in 2006 by a passionate collective of five families—the name itself being an acronym derived from the first names of the young people involved (Harriet, Amber, Laura, Oliver, and William). Supported by high-profile patrons, including former Formula One World Champion Damon Hill OBE, the project has grown significantly. In 2026, they support over 350 adults across Surrey, particularly in Guildford and Woking, helping them avoid isolated cycles and confidently step into the wider community.

The organisation prides itself on its relationship-centered, nurturing ecosystem; they act as an essential emotional safety net for families, guiding parents and guardians through the complex landscape of transition social care when minors reach legal adulthood.

What They Do

Independent Living Skills, Personal Care & Community Inclusion

The core of their service involves providing a modular, holistic blend of social, vocational, and residential support packages tailored to individual goals:

  • A Reason to Get Up (Meaningful Day Opportunities): Delivering a structured, varied program of weekday activities focused on life skills, cooking, healthy living, budgeting, creative arts, and physical fitness.
  • halow Care (Supported Living & Domiciliary Aid): Providing highly flexible, CQC-regulated personal care and home support, allowing young adults to live safely within their own shared tenancies or family homes.
  • Building Futures & Work Stream: Offering specialized pre-employment training, CV writing, and interview practice while building strategic links with local businesses to secure meaningful volunteer work and paid employment.
  • Social Activities & Buddy Service: Organizing active evening and weekend social clubs, excursions, and peer-led holidays to help members foster authentic, lifelong friendships and combat loneliness.

Approach & Values

The halow project focuses on Autonomy, Realising Potential, and Shared Choice.

They prioritise a Person-Centred Development Strategy, ensuring that the individual’s own voice, ambitions, and unique comfort levels dictate their care mapping. Their approach is Progression-Focused; they do not simply manage tasks for their members, but actively coach them to complete tasks themselves, systematically unlocking self-reliance and boosting emotional confidence.

A strong emphasis is placed on "Active Citizenship," ensuring that members are visible, active, and thoroughly integrated into local Surrey high streets, sports facilities, and social venues.

Industry Role

The Halow project acts as a critical specialist delivery partner for Surrey County Council and the regional NHS commissioning frameworks.

By bridging the gap between child services and long-term adult social care, they provide a vital, high-compliance pathway that prevents young neurodivergent individuals from falling into systemic gaps. They serve as a primary model for modern, community-rooted charitable care, proving that when professional compliance is combined with authentic grassroots family values, young adults can successfully achieve autonomous, purposeful adulthoods on their own terms.
