About Us

At Headway, we are the UK-wide charity dedicated to improving life after brain injury. We believe that a brain injury does not just affect the individual; it impacts the entire family. Our mission is to promote the understanding of brain injury and provide vital information, support, and services to survivors, their families, and the professionals who support them.

Who We Are

Headway is a national charity with a network of more than 125 local groups and branches across the UK. Since our inception, we have been the primary point of contact for anyone affected by an acquired brain injury. We combine expert knowledge with a compassionate approach, empowering survivors to navigate their recovery and regain independence.

What We Do

We provide a comprehensive range of resources and support structures to help manage the life-changing effects of brain injury:

  • Information & Resources: We offer an award-winning range of booklets, factsheets, and e-booklets covering all aspects of brain injury, recovery, and rehabilitation.
  • Confidential Helpline: Our team provides expert advice and emotional support to survivors, carers, students, and professionals.
  • Emergency Fund: We provide grants of up to £500 to help families cope with the immediate financial impact of a sudden, catastrophic brain injury.
  • Brain Injury Identity Card: A support tool designed to help survivors communicate their needs in everyday situations or if they come into contact with the police or criminal justice system.
  • Professional Guidance: We offer specialised resources for GPs and legal professionals to assist in the diagnosis, care, and rehabilitation of brain injury patients.

Our Approach & Values

  • Compassionate Support: We focus on the individual’s journey, helping survivors come to terms with their new circumstances and reintegrate into family and community life.
  • Expert Knowledge: We advocate for improved approaches to brain injury screening, acute care, and long-term rehabilitation.
  • Collaborative Network: Through our local groups and branches, we provide community-based services such as rehabilitation programmes, social outings, and respite care.
  • Accessibility: We strive to ensure that everyone affected by brain injury can access the support they need, regardless of their location or circumstances.

Industry Role

We operate as a National Charitable Association and Advocacy Organisation. Our role is to act as the primary intermediary between medical/legal systems and those living with the consequences of brain injury. We provide the essential educational, emotional, and social infrastructure that fills the gaps in statutory care, ensuring that brain injury survivors receive the long-term support required to rebuild their lives.
