About Us
Kalyra
Kalyra (formerly known as Kalyra Communities) is an award-winning not-for-profit aged care and retirement provider based in South Australia. The organisation focuses on creating a "different" kind of aging experience by prioritizing independence, dignity, and community-centred living for older South Australians.
Who We Are
Kalyra operates as a charitable community-based organisation, functioning as a leading provider of housing and care for over 130 years.
The organisation is led by Sara Blunt (CEO), the first female CEO in the company's history, who has focused on transforming the sector through innovative intergenerational and person-centred models. Their model is built on a "social heart," where resources are reinvested into the quality of care and facilities rather than corporate dividends. They are known for their picturesque locations across the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula, and for their pioneering partnership with The Southern Montessori Middle School (co-located at their Woodcroft site).
Headquartered in South Australia, Kalyra prides itself on a legacy that began in 1892. They emphasize that "independence is not about where you live, but how you live," and this philosophy is reflected in their diverse range of services.
What We Do
Retirement Living
Operating six modern villages in locations like Belair, Bellevue Heights, Woodside, and McLaren Vale, offering independent 1, 2, and 3-bedroom homes that allow seniors to downsize without sacrificing lifestyle.
Residential Aged Care
Managing high-demand facilities in Belair, McLaren Vale, and Woodcroft, providing 24/7 clinical care in settings that feel more like homes than institutions.
Help at Home
Providing flexible support services including the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Home Care Packages (HCP), enabling seniors to stay independent in their own homes for longer.
Memory Support & Dementia Care
Offering specialized, secure environments for residents living with cognitive impairment, focusing on sensory stimulation and safety while maintaining a high quality of life.
Intergenerational Programs
Pioneering unique social connections by integrating school students into the aged care environment, particularly at the Kalyra Woodcroft facility, to foster mutual learning and combat social isolation.
Affordable Living
Continuing their charitable mission by providing housing options for those who may be financially disadvantaged, ensuring that high-quality aging is accessible to a broader demographic.
Approach & Values
Kalyra focuses on Belonging, Innovation, and Respect.
They prioritise person-centred care, ensuring that each resident's individual history, preferences, and social needs are at the forefront of their care plan. Their approach is designed to be community-integrated, breaking down the walls of traditional aged care to create vibrant spaces where families and neighbors are encouraged to visit and participate.
A strong emphasis is placed on "Award-Winning Excellence," with the organisation frequently recognized for its innovative service delivery and its ability to adapt to the changing clinical and social needs of the aging population.
Industry Role
Kalyra plays a cornerstone role in the South Australian social services sector, acting as a primary partner for both the Federal Government (Department of Health and Aged Care) and local communities.
As a not-for-profit provider, the organisation contributes to the sustainability of the aged care system by demonstrating that high clinical standards can be maintained within a charitable framework. They act as a "thought leader" in the sector, particularly regarding intergenerational integration and the preservation of historic sites (such as their Belair facility) for modern community use.
They offer a comprehensive care continuum, making them a "provider for life" for many South Australians who move from independent retirement living to home care, and eventually into residential aged care within the same trusted network.
