About Us
Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH)
The Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) is a brand-new, state-of-the-art "super hospital" in Smethwick, serving the populations of Sandwell and West Birmingham. It operates as the primary acute care site for the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust.
Who We Are
Midland Metropolitan University Hospital is a major publicly funded NHS facility designed to consolidate acute healthcare services for the region.
The hospital functions as a centralised emergency and specialist hub, replacing the acute inpatient services previously held at Sandwell General and City Hospital. It is a teaching hospital, working in close partnership with the University of Birmingham and Aston University to foster clinical research and medical education.
MMUH is one of the largest clinical construction projects in the UK, featuring over 700 beds and one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Europe. The organisation is managed by the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust Board and is accountable to NHS England.
All services operate in line with Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards, providing a unified clinical model designed to reduce health inequalities across the Black Country and Birmingham.
