At University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP) we are the regions Major Trauma Centre and we are responsible for providing care across the widest of spectrums: from within peoples homes and working with our voluntary sector partners in local communities, to offering the most specialist hospital care available in our regional centre: for example immunology, cardiothoracic surgery and kidney and bone marrow transplants.
We care for 475,000 in our secondary care catchment population, with a wider peninsula population of almost 2,000,000 people who can access our specialist services.
Delivering our services through a number of key sites across Plymouth and the surrounding area:
- Mount Gould Hospital - We have 30 beds for general rehabilitation, plus 15 beds for stroke rehabilitation patients, and a discharge assessment unit with 10 beds available and a further 30 to follow.
- South Hams Community Hospital - We have 15 beds here and began managing the site in 2021.
- Tavistock Hospital - We have 13 beds here and began managing the site in 2021. Urgent Treatment Centre and Minor Injuries Unites We run an Urgent Treatment Centre at the Cumberland Centre in Devonport, central Plymouth and minor injury units in Tavistock and Kingsbridge.
- Child Development Centre - Developmental services for young children are provided at the Child Development Centre, Scott Business Park.
- The Plymouth Dialysis Unit - Patients needing treatment for renal failure are cared for in state-of-the-art, purpose-built facilities in Estover.
- Radiology Academy - The Plymouth Radiology Academy is the only purpose-built Radiology Academy in the world and provides an inspirational environment in which to learn radiology.
Overview
We are a teaching hospital in partnership with the University of Plymouth and working with Plymouth Marjon University. As host to the Joint Hospital Group South West (JHG(SW)) in a city with a strong military tradition, we have a tri-service staff of nearly 200 military doctors, nurses and allied health professionals who are fully integrated within our facilities.

Job Overview
Fal Ward is a clinical day case unit and is looking for an experienced Oncology nurse who is trained in chemotherapy and wants to take on the challenge of assisting with the coordination of the day-to-day running of the unit.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as Priority and 'At Risk' status, including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
Advert
Coordination of the day-to-day running of the day unit and /or Oncology O/P, Education and leadership for junior staff. Clinical roles include venepuncture, cannulation, CVAD use, Blood transfusions, Chemotherapy &Immunotherapy and other supportive treatments.
Supporting new patients with the correct information, including signposting and safety netting advice. Understanding blood parameters and making decisions according to protocols and the presentation of the patient
Support the senior sister in the managerial duties of running a day case unit and Oncology O/P.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
- Provide effective clinical and managerial leadership across the oncology areas, including inpatients, day case and outpatients, in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM), which empowers staff to deliver patient-centred, evidence-based care within a defined budget.
- Establish systems for a multi-disciplinary approach to patient-centred care delivery and demonstrate good interpersonal, teaching and practical skills required within the speciality, whilst reflecting the oncology philosophy of car,e demonstrating greater involvement of patients and their relatives/carers by using the Trust's patient and public involvement strategy
- Demonstrate a good knowledge of treatment side effects and care and provide patients and carers with advice and support in relation to health promotion, neutropenic sepsis, hair loss and other treatment side effects.
- Practice advanced specialist skills for the client group, including the administration of Cytotoxic & Immunotherapies treatments, and blood products, central venous and peripheral access device care, venepuncture and cannulation.
- Assess patients prior to treatment to determine whether alterations to planned care are needed and refer as appropriate.
- Assess the supportive, palliative care and psychological needs of patients and their carers and refer to appropriate professionals as necessary.
- Within nurse-led clinics, assess patients' suitability for initial referral and treatment at each attendance, for example, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and supportive therapies
- Work in collaboration with colleagues to ensure patients have access to appropriate, timely, good quality information relating to treatment and support, and be active in the delivery of this information for patients, their carers and/or staff.
- Plans, implements, carries out and evaluates care given by self and other nursing staff to patients and their relatives.
- Maintain accurate clinical observations and records, interpret the significance of these and implement appropriate care.
- Make decisions with regard to the clinical intervention required, based on the analysis and interpretation of complex clinical facts (such as blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, and temperature and fluid balance) on a daily basis and in crisis situations.
- Maintain own clinical expertise and competence within the unit's speciality by working a minimum of 80% of the working week clinically as part of the team, undergoing training and updating by external or internal courses and by reading and keeping up to date with changes in practice.
- Act as a clinical resource providing advice, support and supervision to the unit staff and primary and secondary health care professionals regarding specialist patient management.
- Is visible and accessible to patients, visitors and users of the service, proactively promoting the role and responsibilities of the unit's Senior Sister.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- First-level NMC-registered Nurse Specialist clinical proven knowledge across a range of work procedures including SACT administration, underpinned by theory and CPD
- UKONS passport and in-house SACT training completed
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrable experience of leading clinical teams
- Teaching/Mentoring/Assessing Course and/or qualification
- A degree level-post registration qualification or equivalent in Oncology
