About Us

Common Thread is a specialised Scottish provider of residential childcare, therapeutic support, and trauma-informed education. The organisation focuses entirely on enabling vulnerable children and young people to heal, grow, and achieve positive life outcomes within nurturing, family-style environments.

Who We Are

The organisation operates under the legal entity Common Thread Ltd., founded in 2004 by Julie Joseph. The group manages a network of 15 small residential homes and independent schools across Dumfries and Galloway, the Central Belt, and the Scottish Highlands. The day-to-day service delivery relies on specialised therapeutic support workers and educators who are matched directly with young people who have experienced profound trauma, abuse, or neglect.

What We Do

Therapeutic Residential Care

Managing family-sized residential homes designed for up to three young people aged between 8 and 18. Frontline teams provide intensive, round-the-clock therapeutic supervision within peaceful, rural settings to deliver stability, a sense of belonging, and parenting support.

Inclusive Education & Learning Hubs

Operating independently registered schools and learning hubs based in Lockerbie and Kilmarnock. Dedicated teaching teams employ creative, personalised curricula tailored specifically for vulnerable learners who do not thrive within mainstream educational structures.

Short-Term & Crisis Intervention

Providing rapid-response residential placements and crisis support for children experiencing emergency placement breakdowns or requiring immediate respite. Referral teams remain available on a 24-hour basis to ensure immediate physical safety and transitional care monitoring.

Complex Behavioural Support

Utilising tailored, trauma-informed care plans to manage profound emotional and behavioural difficulties. Staff work alongside internal therapeutic experts to implement positive de-escalation frameworks that support long-term emotional well-being.

Approach & Values

Common Thread operates with a focus on putting young people first, combining unconditional love with structural safety. Their practice is built around trauma-informed care models, aiming to replace rigid institutional settings with authentic, highly supportive family dynamics. The company prioritises personal integrity, open communication, and extensive staff training, holding a Platinum Investors in People award for its supportive workplace culture.

Industry Role

Common Thread functions directly within the regulated youth social care and independent education sectors in Scotland. Because the organisation delivers specialised residential care and full-time children's housing, its operations fall under strict statutory tracking.

Every residential home is formally registered, monitored, and inspected by the Care Inspectorate, while its learning centres are regulated under Scottish independent school parameters. The company helps ease regional accommodation pressures on local authorities by providing high-compliance, evidence-based environments for looked-after children.
